One of the most common questions I get from couples planning their wedding is simple: how much food do we actually need? Under-order and guests go hungry. Over-order and you're wasting a big chunk of your budget.
Start With Guest Count and Meal Style
Plated dinners, buffets, and family-style service all have different portion math. Buffets tend to need about 10-15% more food per person than plated meals, since guests naturally take a bit extra when serving themselves.
General Portion Guidelines
Appetizers: 4-6 pieces per person during a 1-hour cocktail hour
Main course (buffet): 8-10 oz of protein per person
Main course (plated): 6-8 oz of protein per person
Sides: 2 sides at 4-6 oz each per person
Cake or dessert: 1 slice per person plus 10% extra
Don't Forget the Vendors
Most caterers and photographers expect a vendor meal as part of their contract. Confirm headcount with every vendor a few weeks out so your final catering order is accurate.
Getting this right starts with a clear headcount and a caterer who asks the right questions. If you're still building your guest list and invite suite, our digital wedding invitation templates can help you track RSVPs and finalize numbers early.
